Trainers Chasing Big Money
Two of our Tauranga based trainers are chasing big money at New Zealand’s richest race day this Saturday 26 January at Ellerslie.
Jim Pender has The Real Beel entered in the Karaka Million Dollar 3YO Classic, the last race of the day. From 9 starts The Real Beel has only had one win but has been placed another 4 times and moved to the Pender owned Panui Lodge Stables back in September 2018. Since then the mare finished 2nd at Racing Tauranga in December, before being drawn wide and racing without cover at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, fading in the straight. The competition is tough though with the 18 horses racing for the $550,000 first prize. The Real Beel also raced in the Karaka Million 2YO Classic last year.
Mark Blackie has two horses running at Ellerslie on Saturday, with Joy Anna competing in the Open Handicap over 1200 meters. Joy Anna had three wins in the first season of racing, but since resuming in December has been a little disappointing before winning a trial two weeks back. Blackie’s other entrant is Le Castile, in the $100,000 Westbury Classic. Le Castille won at Ellerslie two starts back and led all the way, for an easy win, when in open company at Racing Tauranga on January 2nd.
